That awkward moment when your mom tells you to stay in the line when you’re shopping, and when you’re almost near the cashier, she’s not even back yet
and you’re all panicking like “WHERE IS SHE????!!!!!”
and when she finally comes, you’re like

After listening to this album for a number of days straight, I’ve come to realize that these songs are definitely meant to be a love story. After analyzing and really understanding the lyrics, it’s absolutely apparent these songs involve two people, first with introductions, a story of their relationship, then post-relationship. Think of it as a 3-act play.
Coldplay has blown me away more than ever.
~~~
MX – Intro, similar to a movie.
Hurts Like Heaven – Boy (We’ll call Mylo) is a rebellious soul in an oppressed city, using graffiti to bring about an uprising. His graffiti comes from the heart, as most graffiti does. A thematic entrance of Mylo.
Paradise – Girl (we’ll call Xyloto) is a lonely soul; perhaps a hopeless romantic. She lives in the same city as Mylo, one of which she’s dreaming to get out of, or at least cured of its oppression. A thematic entrance of Xyloto.
Charlie Brown – Similar to Hurts Like Heaven, I find this song to be from the boy’s point of view again. It’s clearly about how he won’t like anyone bring him down, utilizing a pure/innocent rebellious attitude. I feel like the soft piano at the end represents him falling in love with Xyloto at first sight.
Us Against The World – They fall in love, considering their personalities click perfectly (She wants the resolution, he’s acting for the resolution of the city.). I feel like it’s them singing about how nothing can stop them now that they’re together; That no matter how much crap is going on around them, their love will overpower everything.
M.M.I.X. – A transition, from oppression to freedom, which leads into ETIAW
Every Teardrop… – The couple starts feeling the change within themselves, as well as the city. More uplifting, and ‘pop-ish,’ focusing on a more general “I’m who I am and no one can bring me down.” It also summarizes their neverending, relentless love. They’re unstoppable, basically, is what this song seems to be saying.
Major Minus – The whole “one eye watching you” makes me honestly think of 1984, and Big Brother. I feel like here, their ‘revolution’ causes the city’s ‘Big Brother’ to catch them. In this moment of arrest, because it was mainly Mylo doing the graffiti, he probably abandoned Xyloto to save his own life, running away (“one eye on the road, and one on you…”).
U.F.O. – Mylo begins to question his life. It seems as though he’s confused about if he should go back to her, or move on with his life: “Lord, I don’t know which way I’m going…” It’s a very transitional, yet lyrical, song. I think the song title represents how, mythologically, U.F.O.s both appear and leave quickly.
Princess of China – This is the big break up. The addition of Rihanna really stresses this, with the powerful lyrics “’Cause you really hurt me…” Mylo and Xyloto break up for the fault of Mylo, according to Rihanna’s lyric: “You let me go…” Essentially, it’s over between them.
Up In Flames – Mylo realizes his mistake, as well as his extreme love for Xyloto. This song seems to be his regret for his actions, as well as the disappointing realizations. But, he asks for forgiveness at the end with, “Can we pour some water on?”
A Hopeless Transmission – Using the same chord progression as MX (the intro), it suggests Xyloto’s thought process. The title also suggests Mylo’s doubt that she’ll even forgive him at all. But the fact that it’s ‘Hopeless’ probably suggests that she doesn’t forgive him.
Don’t Let It Break Your Heart – This track seems to stress that no matter what Mylo has done in the past, Xyloto is trying to let him know that he shouldn’t be heart broken. He should know that he can’t change the past, and he should be willing to move past his mistakes. A song of forgiveness between himself and his soul.
Up With The Birds – Initially mistaken, I thought they would’ve ended up together. This song definitely suggests that they do not, with the most prominent lyric: “Float all over the world just to see her again.” It suggests that he KNOWS he will find her, to the point of 100% certainty. It’s uplifting, as he knows “…good things are coming our way…” They may not be together now, but they will in the end.
